Academic Remediation Services & Technical Computer Graphics
(Summer Course Only)

Remedial Education for incoming 9th, 10th 11th & 12th graders

Academic standards set by the Friends for enrolled youth with deficiencies in English and Mathematics shall accomplish the following goals and objectives improved:

  • skills and knowledge to understand how phonemes, or speech sounds are connected to present. 

  • ability to decode unfamiliar words.  

  • ability to read fluently. 

  • background information and vocabulary to foster reading comprehension. 

  • skills and knowledge to understand basic math word problems and general mathematics.

In addition, the Friends will offer youth improved competencies in the field of Science. 

a. Program's Connection w/ Instructional Programs of the District of Columbia Pubic Schools [DCPS]

The Friends will connect to the instructional programs of DCPS, as we offer District gifted and talented youth instructional tutorial services identical to DCPS in the areas of English, Mathematics and Science that includes:

  • Phonemic awareness 

  • Phonics 

  • Vocabulary development 

  • Reading English and Mathematics word problems fluently, including oral reading 

  • Reading comprehension strategies. 

  • Reading and solving word problems and general mathematical computations.  

b.

Basic Employment Skills

A host of Guest Facilitators will be recruited to provide independent employment workshops to establish:

  • resume development,  

  • interview techniques/imagery,  

  • conflict resolutions/problem solving,  

  • critical thinking/input analysis,  

  • establishing promotional opportunities,  

  • drug/alcohol/crime prevention,  

  • referrals for victims of violent crime/Violent Crimes Compensation Claim or other emergency social services, along with federal/district/private funding/scholarship support for higher learning opportunities.

Basic Computer Graphic Training

  • Orientate Syllabus to Students and Employ Pre-test 

  • Provide an Overview of Poster Assignments 

  • Read and Develop Skills in PhotoShop Software Operations  - Learn How to Scan Materials 

  • Develop Skills for the Illustrator Software 

  • Youth Learn How to Use Tools 

  • Students Practice Developing Various Designs

  • Intense Practice Skills  

  • Establish Layout Procedures for Poster Designs  

  • Finalize Poster Presentations for Final Week  

II. Performing Arts Career Training Skills  
The Friends offers seven (7) specialized performing arts curriculums that integrates academics which includes, but are not limited to:  Drama, Vocal, Instrumental, Dance, Costume Design, Scenographic and Videography studies.  Courses has been specifically designed to ensure the following career outcomes.

Drama

  • Drama students learn to interpret, and understand their characters 

  • Discuss and demonstrate vocal and body expressions for acting styles 

  • Assign drama roles to youth participants 

  • Enunciate diction, voice development, dialects,  

  • Employ voice exercise, speech drills, lectures, and improvisations 

  • Improve their reading and math as it related to Drama and musical theater studies 

  • Undergo intense rehearsals to achieve desired effects  

Vocal

  • Define and Practice Breathing Exercises 

  • Apply Daily Vocal Techniques 

  • Interpret, Shade, Color and present selection 

  • Establish Vocal blends and tones for harmonizing balances  

  • Develop vocal dynamics in selections 

  • Improve their reading and math as it relates to Vocal studies  

  • Undergo intense rehearsals to achieve desired effects  

Instrumental  

  • Interpret and apply music theory 

  • Learn harmony, score and sight reading, and composition skills 

  • Provide lessons using technical knowledge, aesthetic appreciation  

  • Conduct orchestra rehearsals 

  • Coach students in their individual orchestra parts 

  • Distinguish instrumental performances for band or vocalist accompaniments. 

  • Develop musical appreciation 

  • Establish creative input, and teamwork ethics 

  • Undergo intense rehearsals to achieve desired effects  

Dance

  • Theory and practice of dance notations  

  • Definitions of required dance terms and their respected outcomes 

  • Interpret  emotion or enliven to compliment music compositions and characterizations 

  • Shape and mold individual and group choreography 

  • Improve their reading and math skills as it relates to dance 

  • Establish teamwork and creative input 

  • Undergo intense rehearsals to achieve desired effects  

Costume Design 

  • Sketch rough and detailed drawings to create apparel designs for program youth in each musical

  • Draw and cut patterns 

  • Construct garments on/off participants 

  • Alter designs as necessary to achieve desired effect 

  • Use standard sewing equipment such as a machine, and hand-stitching 

  • Visit fabric stores to select special pattern designs, threads, and other accessories needed on stage to compliment the authentic period of costumes worn by performers during that era 

  • Improve their reading and math skills as it relates to Costume Design  

  • Establish creative input and teamwork ethics  

  • Undergo intense preparations to achieve desired effects  

Scenographic

  • Understand and apply stage creating and design techniques and processes. 

  • Learn knowledge about structures and functions of stage designs. 

  • Begin creating (sketching and building) visual musical concepts to further reflect script or scene.

  • Able to reflect how artwork differs visually, spatially, temporally, and functionally. 

  • Understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures. 

  • Reflect artworks and assess characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others.

  • Improve their reading and math skills as it relates to scenographic studies. 

  • Establish creative input and teamwork ethics. 

  • Make connections between visual arts and other disciplines.  

Videography  

  • Identify and use all camera parts 

  • Assist with ideas and research 

  • Develop the film program concept 

  • Utilize the production notebook as guide source 

  • Rehearse plan production and script with youth camera crew 

  • Create film schedules and hold class sessions 

  • Site work area with youth camera crew

  • Interface with staff to produce each musical final presentation. 

  • Improve their reading and math skills as it relates to videography 

  • Establish creative input and teamwork ethics 

  • Undergo intense preparations to record each musical

During each summer and fall semester these independent training courses are specifically designed to culminate into a city-wide youth musical presentation showcasing the careering learning’s of each enrolled in-school youth.
